Almost two years after the announcement of a new manufacturing facility in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, the Anglo-American Aerospace Group, Shimtech, continues to grow and will move into a new purpose-designed 125,000 sq. ft. facility in the next several months.
Shimtech Composites has been operating in Hermosillo since late 2016. Currently with 20 employees, Shimtech plans to hire over 175 employees in the medium term with the commencement of detailed composite part fabrication. The new facility will not only increase assembly capacity, but will start to produce various light-weight composite structures, including fairings, flight control structures and other fiber-reinforced components. The facility will have two autoclaves, including the largest one in Mexico.
The operation represents a total investment of more than $15 million USD and will bring more opportunities for the developing aerospace ecosystem within Sonora, as it continues to strengthen its capability base. Grupo Prodensa has supported Shimtech during the initial analysis, incentives negotiations and the start-up and shelter process.
Shimtech’s operation in Hermosillo reaffirms the importance of Mexico’s growing aerospace industry, which continues to evolve from basic, manual and labor-intensive processes, to high skilled, technical and complex processes that provide a compelling value proposition in the global aerospace market.
